We provide useful information in English for foreigners living in Japan. This is the April 2025 issue of our information service for the foreign community.
This time, we will tell you about the support system for admission fees and tuition fees for universities, junior colleges, technical colleges, and vocational schools for households with three or more dependent children. This system started in April 2025.
Support is available to households with three or more dependent children who are enrolled in a university, junior college, technical college, or vocational school from April, or who are already in their second year or above and enrolled. There are no restrictions on household income.
Support amounts are as shown in the table below. Tuition fees are annual amounts.

The school will send out instructions in April, so please follow those instructions and submit the necessary documents to your school. The school will then apply to the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
The support money will not be paid to the student, but to the school, and will reduce the entrance fee and tuition fees, so the amount paid by the student will be refunded later.
Third year high school students can make advance applications. The high school will send out instructions, so please apply.
Foreigners with the following residence statuses can apply:
(1) “TOKUBETSU EIJUSHA”("Legal special permanent resident")
(2) “EIJUSHA”("Permanent resident"), "Spouse or child of a Japanese national", "Spouse or child of a permanent resident"
(3) “TEIJUSHA”("Long-term resident") who intends to become a permanent resident in the future.
(4) “KAZOKU TAIZAI”("Family stay")
"Family stay" of those who have graduated from a Japanese elementary school, junior high school and high school, or those who entered Japan before the age of graduating from elementary school and have graduated from a Japanese junior high school and high school can apply.
